Unit Plan 27 (Grade 5 Art): Preparing Artwork for Display
Grade 5 art unit on preparing artwork for display through mounting, labeling, and gallery organization to present work professionally and clearly.
Focus: Mount and prepare artwork for display using appropriate mounting, labeling, and organization techniques.
Grade Level: 5
Subject Area: Art (Visual Arts • Presenting)
Total Unit Duration: 1–3 weeks, 50–60 minutes per session
I. Introduction
Students shift into the role of curators, learning how to get artwork ready for a gallery-style display. They practice mounting pieces neatly, creating clear labels (title, artist, medium), and thinking about how to organize artworks on a wall or panel so they look intentional and inviting. By the end of the unit, students understand that presentation is part of the artistic process, helping viewers take their work seriously and understand it more easily.
Essential Questions
- What does it mean to prepare artwork for display, and why does it matter?
- How do mounting and craftsmanship affect how viewers see and value artwork?
- What information should go on an artwork label, and how can labels help viewers understand the work?
- How can we organize and arrange artworks so that a display feels balanced, clear, and welcoming?
