Unit Plan 12 (Grade 1 Art): Art from Celebrations

Focus: Recognize how art can show traditions, celebrations, and community life from different places and families.

Grade Level: 1

Subject Area: Art (Visual Arts • Connecting)

Total Unit Duration: 1–3 weeks, 45–60 minutes per session

I. Introduction

In this unit, first graders explore how artwork can tell stories about celebrations, special days, and community events. They look closely at images of parades, holidays, festivals, and family gatherings to notice clues—such as decorations, clothing, food, music, and groups of people—that show something special is happening. Students talk about celebrations in their own lives and compare them to celebrations in artwork from other communities. By the end, they understand that art can show traditions and community life, not just everyday moments.

Essential Questions

  • How can art show a celebration or special tradition?
  • What picture clues help me know that people are celebrating something?
  • How can art help me learn about community life in different places?
  • What celebrations or traditions are important to me and my family, and how might they look in art?
