Unit Plan 13 (Grade 1 Art): Celebration Art Project

Focus: Create artwork inspired by a holiday, celebration, or special event, using personal experiences and imagination to show traditions and community life.

Grade Level: 1

Subject Area: Art (Visual Arts • Connecting/Creating)

Total Unit Duration: 1–3 weeks, 45–60 minutes per session

I. Introduction

In this unit, first graders use what they know about celebrations and traditions to create their own celebration artwork. They think about holidays, family events, school parties, and community gatherings that matter to them, then use imagination and memories to plan and draw a scene that shows who is there, what is happening, and why it is special. Students look back at celebration artworks from other places and use simple clues—decorations, special clothes, food, and music—to inspire their own ideas. By the end, they can explain which celebration they chose and how their artwork shows a tradition, celebration, or community event from their life or imagination.

Essential Questions

  • How can my artwork show a celebration, tradition, or community event that is important to me?
  • What clues can I add (decorations, clothes, food, activities) so viewers know it is a special day?
  • How can I use my memories, imagination, and stories to plan a celebration picture?
  • How is my celebration artwork similar to or different from celebration art from other places?
