Unit Plan 16 (Grade 1 Art): Critique Circle

Focus: Share what you like about classmates’ artwork using simple criteria such as neatness and use of color.

Grade Level: 1

Subject Area: Art (Visual Arts • Responding)

Total Unit Duration: 1–3 weeks, 45–60 minutes per session

I. Introduction

In this unit, first graders will practice being kind art critics. Instead of just saying “I like it,” they learn to use simple criteria—like neatness, use of color, and clear picture—to talk about artwork. Students sit in a critique circle to look at classmates’ art, say what they notice, and share what they like using kind, specific words. They also learn how to listen respectfully when others are sharing. By the end, students can describe what they like about a classmate’s artwork using simple art words and positive feedback.

Essential Questions

  • How can I use kind words to talk about my classmates’ artwork?
  • What simple art words (neat, colorful, clear) can I use to say what I like?
  • Why is it important to listen carefully when someone shares about their art?
  • How does giving and hearing kind feedback help us feel proud of our artwork?
