Unit Plan 33 (Grade 1 Art): Personal Growth Reflection

Focus: Reflect on how artistic skills have improved over the year and connect artwork to personal experiences and memories.

Grade Level: 1

Subject Area: Art (Visual Arts • Connecting)

Total Unit Duration: 1–3 weeks, 45–60 minutes per session

I. Introduction

In this unit, first graders take time to look back at their artwork from earlier in the year and notice how they have grown as artists. Students compare early and recent pieces, talking about changes in neatness, details, color choices, and how clearly their pictures show what is happening. They also think about how their art shows their own life, family, and feelings. Finally, students create a simple “Now I’m a First Grade Artist” reflection page that shows something from their life and includes a few words about how they draw now. By the end, they can name at least one way their art has improved and one way it connects to their personal experiences.

Essential Questions

  • How has my artwork changed and improved since the beginning of first grade?
  • How does my art show things from my life, like family, places, or memories?
  • What can I do now in art (details, neatness, color) that I could not do as well before?
  • How can thinking about my art help me feel proud of my growth?

II. Objectives and Standards

Learning Objectives — Students will be able to:

  1. Look at early and recent artworks and compare them using simple words (more details, neater, more color).
  2. Identify at least one way they have improved as an artist (e.g., “I add backgrounds now,” “I color more neatly”).
  3. Describe how at least one artwork connects to a personal experience (family, event, favorite place, feeling).
  4. Create a simple reflection drawing that shows something from their life and how they draw now as a first-grade artist.
  5. Share one sentence about their growth and one thing they are excited to draw in the future.

Standards Alignment — 1st Grade (NCAS-Aligned)

  • VA:Cn10.1a — Create artwork inspired by personal experiences and explain those connections.
    • Example: Students draw a family event and describe it.

Success Criteria — Student Language

  • I can see a difference between my early and later artwork.
  • I can say one way my art has improved (more details, neater, more color, better stories).
  • I can explain how one picture is about my life or feelings.
  • I can make a new drawing that shows something from my life now as a first grader.
  • I can say one thing I am proud of as an artist.
