Unit Plan 3 (Grade 1 Art): Plan Before You Paint

Focus: Create a simple sketch or plan before beginning a final artwork, and notice how planning helps organize ideas and use space more thoughtfully.

Grade Level: 1

Subject Area: Art (Visual Arts • Creating)

Total Unit Duration: 1–3 weeks, 45–60 minutes per session

I. Introduction

In this unit, first graders learn that many artists plan before they paint. Instead of starting with a brush right away, students practice making light pencil sketches to decide where things go, how big they are, and what the picture is about. They see how a simple plan can make painting easier, neater, and more organized. By the end, students understand that making a quick sketch first is part of being a thoughtful artist, not a sign that their ideas are wrong.

Essential Questions

  • What does it mean to plan a picture before painting?
  • How can a simple sketch help me decide where to put things in my artwork?
  • How does planning first make painting feel easier or clearer?
  • When might an artist want to change their plan before they paint?

II. Objectives and Standards

Learning Objectives — Students will be able to:

  1. Explain in simple words what a sketch or plan is in art.
  2. Create a simple pencil sketch that shows where the main parts of a picture will go before painting.

  4. Compare a “planned” picture to a “no-plan” picture and notice differences in organization and use of space.
  5. Share one way planning helped them feel more confident or organized when painting.
