Unit Plan 24 (Grade 1 Art): Revision Workshop

Focus: Improve earlier artwork by adding details and neatening work after discussion and self-check.

Grade Level: 1

Subject Area: Art (Visual Arts • Creating)

Total Unit Duration: 1–3 weeks, 45–60 minutes per session

I. Introduction

In this unit, first graders learn that artists do not always finish in one try—they often revise their work to make it stronger. Students revisit one or two earlier artworks and use what they now know about checklists, neatness, and details to improve them. After brief discussion with the teacher or a partner, they add missing details (background, patterns, small objects) or clean up messy areas to make their pictures clearer and more complete. By the end, students understand that revision is part of being an artist and can name at least one way they improved an older artwork.

Essential Questions

  • What does it mean to revise my artwork?
  • How can adding details and improving neatness make my picture clearer?
  • How can talking with a teacher or partner help me decide what to change?
  • Why is it helpful for artists to go back and improve earlier work instead of rushing to be “done”?

II. Objectives and Standards

Learning Objectives — Students will be able to:

  1. Look at an earlier artwork and use simple criteria (neatness, details, clear picture) to decide what could be improved.
  2. Participate in a short discussion with the teacher or a partner about ways to revise their artwork.
  3. Add details (such as background objects, patterns, or small features) to improve clarity and interest.
  4. Improve neatness by cleaning up coloring, fixing edges, or adjusting misplaced marks.
  5. Explain at least one change they made and how it helped their artwork.

Standards Alignment — 1st Grade (NCAS-Aligned)

  • VA:Cr3.1a — Revise artwork by adding details or improving neatness after discussion.
