Unit Plan 26 (Grade 1 Art): Studio Project III — Creative Choice

Focus: Complete a student-choice artwork that shows effort, care, and organized composition from start to finish.

Grade Level: 1

Subject Area: Art (Visual Arts • Creating)

Total Unit Duration: 1–3 weeks, 45–60 minutes per session

I. Introduction

In this unit, first graders put together everything they’ve learned about planning, revising, and craftsmanship to create a creative-choice studio project. Students choose their own subject (within simple class guidelines) and use drawing and/or collage materials to complete one finished artwork. The emphasis is on effort and care—taking time with coloring, cutting, gluing, and details rather than rushing. By the end, students can explain what they chose to create, how they showed their best effort, and how they know their artwork is truly “finished.”

Essential Questions

  • What does it mean to show effort and care in my artwork?
  • How can I use what I learned about planning, neatness, and details in a creative-choice project?
  • How do I know when an artwork is finished and ready to share?
  • Why is it important for artists to make choices and then stick with a project until it’s done?

II. Objectives and Standards

Learning Objectives — Students will be able to:

  4. Use a simple checklist (neatness, use of color, use of space, clear picture) to evaluate when their artwork is finished.
  5. Share their creative-choice artwork and describe one way they showed their best effort.
