Unit Plan 16 (Grade 1 Counselor): How to Join Play
Teach Grade 1 joining play with kind phrases, respectful listening, turn-taking, safe next steps, and adult help when problems continue.
Focus: Teach students respectful ways to join games, conversations, or activities. The counselor models phrases such as “Can I play too?” “What are you playing?” “Can I help?” and “Can I have the next turn?” Students also learn that if the answer is not what they hoped for, they can wait, choose another activity, or ask an adult for help if someone is being repeatedly unkind.
Grade Level: 1
Subject Area: School Counseling (Friendship Skills • Joining Play • Respectful Problem-Solving)
Total Unit Duration: 1–2 weeks, 30 minutes per session
I. Introduction
This Grade 1 counseling lesson helps students learn how to join play in respectful, friendly, and safe ways. Students often want to join games, conversations, centers, recess activities, or group projects, but they may not yet know what to say, how to wait, or what to do if the answer is not what they hoped for.
The counselor models simple joining-play phrases and helps students practice listening to the response. Students learn that joining play includes using kind words, noticing what is happening, waiting for a turn, respecting others’ answers, and choosing a safe next step. The lesson also teaches students that if someone is repeatedly unkind, excluding on purpose, or making the situation feel unsafe, asking an adult for help is a strong and responsible choice.
