Unit Plan 12 (Grade 1 Counselor): Mistakes Help Us Grow
Teach Grade 1 growth mindset with mistakes, “not yet,” helpful self-talk, strengths, and still-learning reflection activities.
Focus: Introduce growth mindset in a Grade 1-friendly way. Students learn that mistakes do not mean they are bad at something; mistakes show that their brain is learning. The counselor uses a read-aloud, drawing challenge, puzzle, or “not yet” activity where students practice helpful self-talk such as “I can try again,” “I can ask for help,” or “I am still learning.”
Grade Level: 1
Subject Area: School Counseling (Growth Mindset • Self-Talk • Strengths and Growth)
Total Unit Duration: 1–2 weeks, 30 minutes per session
I. Introduction
This Grade 1 counseling lesson helps students understand that mistakes are a normal part of learning. Students learn that making a mistake does not mean they are bad at something. Instead, mistakes can show the brain what to practice next.
The counselor introduces growth mindset through a read-aloud, drawing challenge, puzzle, puppet story, or “not yet” activity. Students practice replacing stuck thoughts such as “I can’t do this” with helpful self-talk such as “I can try again,” “I can ask for help,” “I am still learning,” and “I cannot do it yet.” Students also identify personal strengths, interests, and things they are still practicing.
Essential Questions
- What is a mistake?
- How can mistakes help students learn?
- What can students say when work feels hard?
- What does “not yet” mean?
