I. Introduction

This Grade 1 counseling lesson helps students understand that every student is an important part of the classroom community. Students learn that belonging means feeling safe, included, welcomed, and valued. The counselor uses a puzzle, paper chain, class web, read-aloud, or picture scenarios to show that each person’s words and actions can help the whole class feel stronger.

Students practice simple belonging-building behaviors, such as inviting someone to join, using names kindly, listening when others speak, encouraging classmates, sharing materials, and noticing when someone feels left out. The lesson reinforces that a classroom community is built through many small choices students make every day.
