Unit Plan 18 (Grade 1 ELA): Sharing Findings Clearly

Focus: Speaking in complete sentences; visuals that clarify; polite listening

Grade Level: 1

Subject Area: English Language Arts (Speaking/Listening • Writing/Publishing • Language)

Total Unit Duration: 5 sessions (one week), 45–60 minutes per session

I. Introduction

This week, first graders turn their learning into clear, short presentations. They will plan what to say, create a visual that teaches (drawing/labels or a simple slide), and speak in complete sentences with appropriate volume, pace, and expression. Peers practice polite listening and giving kid-friendly feedback. With guidance, students may use a digital tool (photo/recording or teacher slide) to publish and share.

II. Objectives and Standards

Learning Objectives — Students will be able to…

  1. Describe a topic or findings using relevant details in complete sentences with clear voice and pace (SL.1.4, SL.1.6, L.1.1).
  2. Add and reference visuals (drawing/labels or a simple slide) to clarify ideas when speaking (SL.1.5 within SL.1.4–SL.1.6).
  3. With guidance, publish/record a brief share using a digital tool and collaborate for feedback (W.1.6).
  4. Listen politely and respond with a complete-sentence question or comment that stays on topic (SL.1.6).

Standards Alignment — CCSS Grade 1

  • SL.1.4–SL.1.6 Describe with relevant details; add visuals to clarify; produce complete sentences appropriate to task/situation.
  • W.1.6 With guidance and support, use a variety of digital tools to produce and publish writing (adapted here for short recorded/visual shares) and to collaborate with peers.
  • L.1.1 Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when speaking.

Success Criteria — student language

  • I can tell my topic and two details in complete sentences.
  • I can show my visual and explain how it helps.
  • I can speak clearly (face the audience, good volume, steady pace).
  • As a listener, I can ask one on-topic question or give one kind comment in a complete sentence.
