Unit Plan 18 (Grade 1 Math): Midyear Review—Fluency & Place Value

Grade 1 math stations that build fluency within 20, strengthen place value to 120, and apply strategies in word problems using simple measurement and data.

Unit Plan 18 (Grade 1 Math): Midyear Review—Fluency & Place Value

Focus: Integrate addition/subtraction fluency and place-value understanding through math stations, mini-projects, and games; apply strategies in word problems with simple measurement/data contexts.

Grade Level: 1

Subject Area: Mathematics (OA • NBT • MD)

Total Unit Duration: 5 sessions (one week), 45–60 minutes per session

I. Introduction

This midyear tune-up strengthens core skills in operations and place value. Students rotate through targeted stations (fluency games, place-value builds, word-problem labs) and bring strategies together in short projects that require planning, modeling, and justification.

Essential Questions

  • How can I choose a smart strategy (make-10, doubles, count on/back) to add or subtract efficiently?
  • How do tens and ones help me compare and compute with two-digit numbers?
  • How do representations (ten frames, number bonds, number lines, base-ten models) support clear explanations?

II. Objectives and Standards

Learning Objectives — Students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate growing fluency within 20 using efficient mental strategies (make-10, doubles/near doubles, count on/back).
  2. Read, write, and count to 120 from any number; represent numbers with tens and ones (bundles of 10).
  3. Compare two-digit numbers using tens/ones and symbols >, =, <.
  4. Solve one-step word problems (add/sub) with drawings/equations, and explain reasonableness of answers.
  5. Communicate mathematically: select a representation, label work, and justify thinking with evidence.

Standards Alignment — CCSS Grade 1 (threaded across the unit)

  • 1.OA.1–6: Represent/solve problems; apply properties/relationships; fluency within 10 & 20.
  • 1.NBT.1–5: Count to 120; understand tens/ones; compare two-digit numbers; add within 100 (no regrouping); find 10 more/less.
  • 1.MD.1–4: Compare lengths with nonstandard units; tell & write time to the hour/half-hour; organize/interpret data (used as problem contexts).
  • Mathematical Practices: MP.1–MP.6 threaded (perseverance, reasoning, modeling, tools, precision).

Success Criteria — Student Language

  • I can solve facts within 20 using a named strategy and explain why it works.
  • I can show a number with tens and ones and use that to compare numbers.
  • I can choose a model (ten frame/number bond/number line/base-ten blocks) that matches the problem and helps me explain.
