Unit Plan 4 (Grade 1 PE): Gallop & Slide Rodeo

Grade Level: 1

Subject Area: Physical Education (Locomotor SkillsActive ParticipationRules & Safety)

Total Unit Duration: 1 core session + 3 optional sessions (1–2 weeks), 20–30 minutes per session

I. Introduction

Students continue building locomotor confidence by focusing on two important sideways and traveling movements: galloping and sliding. These skills help young students improve body control, rhythm, balance, and coordination while moving through shared space. In this unit, students begin with a playful Horse Parade warm-up and then practice in a fun Gallop & Slide Rodeo Relay format that keeps them moving and smiling. The goal is to help students learn how to travel safely, keep their bodies under control, and enjoy active movement while following PE routines.

Essential Questions

  • How can I gallop and slide with more control?
  • What helps me move sideways and forward safely in PE?
  • How do PE rules and routines help relay games work well?
  • How can I stay active and have fun while practicing a new locomotor skill?
