Unit Plan 8 (Grade 2 Art): Feedback & Improvement

Focus: Use feedback from peers and teacher to revise artwork, improving detail, neatness, and use of space.

Grade Level: 2

Subject Area: Art (Visual Arts • Creating • Responding)

Total Unit Duration: 1–3 weeks, 50–60 minutes per session

I. Introduction

Students learn that artists rarely finish a piece in one try—they look, think, talk, and revise. Building on recent artwork, students practice giving and receiving kind, helpful, and specific feedback using very simple criteria like neatness, use of space, and clear main subject. They then use that feedback to make small but powerful changes to improve their work. By the end of the unit, students understand that revising artwork is part of being an artist, not a sign of doing something “wrong.”

Essential Questions

  • What does it mean to revise artwork?
  • How can feedback from a partner or teacher help make my art better?
  • Why is it important to use simple criteria (like neatness and use of space) when we talk about art?
  • How do small changes—adding details, fixing space, cleaning up lines—change how people see my artwork?

II. Objectives and Standards

Learning Objectives — Students will be able to:

  1. Use simple criteria (neatness, use of space, clear main subject) to talk about artwork.
  2. Give kind and specific feedback to a partner using sentence starters.
  3. Revise their own artwork by adding or fixing details, improving neatness, or adjusting space.
  4. Use a simple self-checklist to evaluate their own work before calling it done.
  5. Explain one way that feedback and revision improved their artwork.

Standards Alignment — 2nd Grade (NCAS-Aligned)

  • VA:Cr3.2a — Revise artwork after discussion to improve detail and clarity.
    • Example: Students add missing details after peer feedback.
  • VA:Re9.2a — Evaluate artwork using simple criteria such as neatness and use of space.
    • Example: Students use a checklist to assess their own work.

Success Criteria — Student Language

  • I can use simple words (neat, messy, full space, empty space) to talk about art.
  • I can give kind feedback by telling one thing I like and one thing that could be even better.
  • I can change my artwork in at least one way to make it clearer or neater.
  • I can use a checklist to see if my artwork is ready to share.
  • I can say one way feedback helped my artwork improve.
