Unit Plan 17 (Grade 2 Art): Refinement Workshop

Focus: Improve craftsmanship and clarity of message by revising artwork using teacher and peer feedback.

Grade Level: 2

Subject Area: Art (Visual Arts • Creating • Responding)

Total Unit Duration: 1–3 weeks, 50–60 minutes per session

I. Introduction

In this unit, students learn that artists often go back to their work to make it clearer, neater, and more powerful. Building on their recent message artworks and critique sessions, students review feedback from classmates and the teacher and use it to make thoughtful revisions. They focus on improving craftsmanship (neatness, details, careful coloring) and clarity (easy-to-understand message and composition). By the end, students see revision as a normal and positive part of making art, not a sign that they did something wrong.

Essential Questions

  • How can feedback help me make my artwork clearer and stronger?
  • What does it mean to improve craftsmanship and clarity in my art?
  • Why do artists revise their work instead of stopping after the first try?
  • How do small changes in detail, neatness, and composition change how people see my picture?

II. Objectives and Standards

Learning Objectives — Students will be able to:

  1. Review feedback from teacher and peers about their message artwork.
  2. Identify at least one area to improve related to craftsmanship (neatness, detail, careful coloring) and one area related to clarity (composition, clear message).
  3. Revise their artwork by making specific changes based on feedback (e.g., fixing messy areas, adding helpful background details).
  4. Use a simple revision checklist to track the changes they made.
  5. Explain one way their artwork is better after revision.

Standards Alignment — 2nd Grade (NCAS-Aligned)

  • VA:Cr3.5a — Revise artwork using teacher and peer feedback to improve clarity, detail, and technical quality.
