Unit Plan 10 (Grade 2 Counselor): Feelings, Choices, and Coping Tools

Focus: Help students connect emotions to safe choices. Students review feelings and then decide which coping tools might work in common Grade 2 situations, such as losing a game, being left out, making a mistake, or feeling worried about a test. The counselor emphasizes that feelings are okay, but choices must be safe and respectful.

Grade Level: 2

Subject Area: School Counseling (FeelingsCoping ToolsSafe Choices)

Total Unit Duration: 1–2 weeks, 30 minutes per session

I. Introduction

This Grade 2 counseling lesson helps students understand that feelings are normal, but the choices students make when they have strong feelings matter. Students review emotions such as mad, sad, worried, embarrassed, frustrated, disappointed, jealous, excited, and calm. They connect those feelings to body clues, such as tight fists, tears, butterflies, hot face, fast heartbeat, wiggly energy, or wanting to yell.

Students then practice choosing safe and respectful coping tools for common Grade 2 situations. Examples may include losing a game, being left out, making a mistake, feeling worried about a test, being corrected, waiting for a turn, or feeling frustrated during hard work. The goal is for students to learn that they can feel any feeling while still choosing a safe, helpful response.

  • How can body clues help students notice strong emotions?
  • Why are feelings okay, but unsafe choices not okay?
