Total Unit Duration: 5 sessions (one week), 45–60 minutes per session

I. Introduction

Students revisit major Grade 2 ideas through short, mixed tasks that foreground strategies, precision, and explanations. Each session ends with a quick self-check and goal-setting using student-friendly checklists.

Essential Questions

  • Which strategy fits this problem type, and how do I know?
  • How do representations (drawings, number lines, tables, graphs) clarify my thinking?
  • How can a checklist help me reflect, revise, and get ready for the final exhibition?

II. Objectives and Standards

Learning Objectives — Students will be able to:

  1. Apply fluent strategies within 20/100/1,000 and explain why they work.
  2. Solve one- and two-step problems using drawings, equations, and unit/label precision.
  3. Read, make, and interpret simple data displays; use number lines and measurement models.
  4. Classify and draw shapes using attributes; justify decisions.
  5. Use checklists and rubrics to self-assess and set goals.

Standards Alignment — CCSS Grade 2 (spiral across the week)

  • 2.OA: Add/sub within 20; one- and two-step problems; odd/even; arrays.
  • 2.NBT: Place value (100s, 10s, 1s); add/sub within 100 & 1,000; mental 10s/100s shifts; explain strategies.
  • 2.MD: Measure/estimate lengths; add/sub lengths on number lines; time & money; collect/represent/interpret data.
  • 2.G: Recognize/draw shapes with given attributes; partition shapes; justify classifications.
  • Mathematical Practices: MP.1–MP.6 emphasized (perseverance, reasoning, modeling, tools, precision).

Success Criteria — Student Language

  • I can choose a strategy (draw, number line, tens/ones, equation) and explain why it fits.
  • I can show units/labels and check if my answer makes sense.
