Unit Plan 14 (Grade 2 PE): Kicking to Big Goals

Build Grade 2 kicking skills with controlled dribbling, accurate goal targeting, and force adjustment through active soccer-style games that improve coordination and participation.

Unit Plan 14 (Grade 2 PE): Kicking to Big Goals

Focus: Develop kicking accuracy and force control by practicing foot dribbling, controlled approach steps, and kicks to large goals or cone gates from different distances.

Grade Level: 2

Subject Area: Physical Education (Object ControlKicking SkillsActive Participation)

Total Unit Duration: 1 core session + 2 optional sessions (1–3 weeks), 50–60 minutes per session

I. Introduction

Students build early soccer-style object-control skills by learning how to move a ball with their feet and kick it toward a target with better control. This unit begins with foot dribbling around cones and along lines so students can practice small touches, keeping the ball close, and changing direction safely. Students then apply those skills in Goal Zone Kicks, where they aim for large goals or cone gates from different spots and begin to notice how much force is needed for close and far targets. Throughout the unit, students practice staying active, using safe spacing, and making smart kicking choices instead of always kicking as hard as they can.

Essential Questions

  • How can I keep a ball close to my feet while moving in control?
  • What helps me kick a ball toward a large goal or cone gate more accurately?
  • How do I know when to use a soft kick and when to use a stronger kick?
  • How can I stay active and safe while many students are dribbling and kicking at the same time?

II. Objectives and Standards

Learning Objectives — Students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate simple foot dribbling using small controlled touches in a defined space.
  2. Kick a stationary or slowly moving ball toward a large target with improving accuracy and control.
  3. Adjust force based on target distance and size.
  4. Participate actively during kicking stations and games with limited downtime.

Standards Alignment — 2nd Grade (SHAPE America-based custom)

  • PE:S1.2d – Object Control: Kicking & Dribbling Kick a stationary and slowly moving ball toward a target and demonstrate simple foot dribbling in a controlled space.
    • Example: Students dribble a ball with their feet through a set of cones and then kick it into a goal.
  • PE:S2.2c – Effort & Force (Fast/Slow, Hard/Soft) Adjust speed, effort, and force (fast/slow, hard/soft) to match the demands of different movement tasks and games.
    • Example: Students throw soft foam balls gently to a nearby partner and more firmly toward a distant target.
  • PE:S3.2a – Active Participation in MVPA Participate consistently in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity during class activities and games.
    • Example: Students remain active during a series of tag games, fitness challenges, or relay activities without sitting out unless instructed.

Success Criteria — Student Language

  • I can use small foot touches to dribble a ball around cones and lines.
  • I can kick a ball toward a big goal or cone gate with control.
  • I can use a softer kick for a close target and a stronger kick for a farther target.
  • I can stay active and ready during kicking stations and games.
