Unit Plan 5 (Grade 2 PE): Locomotor Combos

Help Grade 2 students combine locomotor skills in movement sequences through relays and games that build control, coordination, memory, and active participation.

Unit Plan 5 (Grade 2 PE): Locomotor Combos

Focus: Combine multiple locomotor skills in short movement sequences while staying active, controlled, and ready to transition from one movement to the next.

Grade Level: 2

Subject Area: Physical Education (Locomotor SkillsMovement SequencesActive Participation)

Total Unit Duration: 1 core session + 2 optional sessions (1–3 weeks), 50–60 minutes per session

I. Introduction

Students build on their locomotor foundation by learning how to connect movements together smoothly instead of doing one movement at a time. This unit helps students practice combinations such as run + leap, skip + jump, or hop + slide while keeping their bodies under control and staying aware of their space. Through Coach Says and Pattern Path Relay, students learn to listen for movement cues, remember short sequences, and perform them with increasing confidence. The unit also emphasizes staying active for most of class, moving quickly between turns, and showing excitement and effort during game play.

Essential Questions

  • How can I combine two or more locomotor skills in the correct order?
  • What helps me move smoothly from one locomotor skill to the next?
  • How can I stay in control when I have to remember and perform a movement sequence?
  • How do I stay active and ready during relays and movement games?

II. Objectives and Standards

Learning Objectives — Students will be able to:

  1. Perform locomotor skills such as run, hop, jump, gallop, slide, leap, and skip with control and coordination.
  2. Combine two or more locomotor skills into simple movement sequences in the correct order.
  3. Apply locomotor combinations during game-like challenges and relays.
  4. Participate actively and continuously during movement games and class tasks.

Standards Alignment — 2nd Grade (SHAPE America-based custom)

  • PE:S1.2a – Locomotor Skills with Control Perform locomotor skills (run, hop, jump, gallop, slide, leap, and skip) with control, coordination, and appropriate speed for the task.
    • Example: Students complete a locomotor obstacle course using different movements at various points (run to the cone, hop through hoops, slide along a line).
  • PE:S1.2f – Combining Skills in Simple Games Combine locomotor and object-control skills in simple game situations and challenges.
    • Example: Students run to pick up a ball, dribble it with their feet, and then kick it into a marked goal zone.
  • PE:S3.2a – Active Participation in MVPA Participate consistently in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity during class activities and games.
    • Example: Students remain active during a series of tag games, fitness challenges, or relay activities without sitting out unless instructed.

Success Criteria — Student Language

  • I can do two locomotor moves in a row, like run + leap or hop + slide.
  • I can remember the order of a movement pattern and perform it correctly.
  • I can move with control while staying in my own space.
  • I can stay active and ready during relays and games.
