Unit Plan 17 (Grade 2 PE): Object Control Stations

Build all key object-control skills in one engaging PE circuit—students roll, throw, catch, kick, dribble, and strike through active stations that boost coordination, confidence, and participation.

Unit Plan 17 (Grade 2 PE): Object Control Stations

Focus: Practice a wide range of object-control skills in one session by helping students roll, throw, catch, kick, dribble, and strike in short active stations with repeated success.

Grade Level: 2

Subject Area: Physical Education (Object ControlSkill PracticeActive Participation)

Total Unit Duration: 1 core session + 2 optional sessions (1–3 weeks), 50–60 minutes per session

I. Introduction

Students bring together many of the object-control skills they have practiced across earlier PE units and use them in one active station-based lesson sequence. Instead of focusing on only one skill, students rotate through short tasks that include bowling rolls, hoop tosses, partner catching, goal kicks, and balloon striking. This unit gives students repeated chances to practice familiar skills in manageable station formats while staying active for most of class. It also helps students notice that different object-control tasks require different body actions, but all of them improve with focus, repeated practice, and safe participation.

Essential Questions

  • How can I use different object-control skills in one PE lesson and still stay organized and successful?
  • What changes when I go from rolling, to throwing, to catching, to kicking, to striking?
  • How can I stay active and keep trying, even when one station feels harder than another?
  • What safe routines help stations run smoothly when many students are using equipment at once?

II. Objectives and Standards

Learning Objectives — Students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate multiple object-control skills including rolling, throwing, catching, kicking, dribbling, and striking.
  2. Show improving control and accuracy while moving through different station tasks.
  3. Transition safely between stations and use equipment responsibly.
  4. Participate actively for most of class while practicing a variety of skills.

Standards Alignment — 2nd Grade (SHAPE America-based custom)

  • PE:S1.2c – Object Control: Throwing & Catching Throw objects (e.g., yarn balls, foam balls) underhand and overhand toward a target and catch objects thrown at an appropriate distance with increasing success.
    • Example: Students throw a ball overhand toward a wall target and then catch a ball tossed by a partner from a short distance.
  • PE:S1.2d – Object Control: Kicking & Dribbling Kick a stationary and slowly moving ball toward a target and demonstrate simple foot dribbling in a controlled space.
    • Example: Students dribble a ball with their feet through a set of cones and then kick it into a goal.
  • PE:S1.2e – Object Control: Striking Strike a lightweight object (balloon, foam ball) with hands and long-handled implements (paddle, foam bat) with developing control.
    • Example: Students strike a balloon upward with a paddle, trying to keep it in the air for several hits.
  • PE:S3.2a – Active Participation in MVPA Participate consistently in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity during class activities and games.
    • Example: Students remain active during a series of tag games, fitness challenges, or relay activities without sitting out unless instructed.

Success Criteria — Student Language

  • I can practice different object-control skills at different stations.
  • I can roll, throw, catch, kick, or strike with better control when I focus on the task.
  • I can follow station directions and use equipment safely.
  • I can stay active and keep trying at each station.
