Unit Plan 10 (Grade 2 PE): Rolling to Targets
Help Grade 2 students improve rolling accuracy and control by practicing underhand rolls, adjusting force for near and far targets, and following safe routines during partner and bowling-style games.
Focus: Develop rolling accuracy and the ability to adjust force by practicing underhand rolling to partners, stopping balls with control, and aiming at targets from different distances.
Grade Level: 2
Subject Area: Physical Education (Object Control • Force & Accuracy • Safety & Routines)
Total Unit Duration: 1 core session + 2 optional sessions (1–3 weeks), 50–60 minutes per session
I. Introduction
Students build object-control skills by learning how to roll a ball with purpose instead of just pushing it anywhere. This unit helps students practice underhand rolling, stopping a ball with control, and adjusting how soft or strong they roll depending on how far away the target is. Through partner rolling and bowling-style target games, students begin to understand that accuracy comes from body position, eyes on target, and using the right amount of force. The unit also reinforces important PE routines such as waiting behind lines, taking turns safely, retrieving equipment on signal, and using clear boundaries during rolling activities.
Essential Questions
- How can I roll a ball so it goes where I want it to go?
- How do I know when to use a soft roll and when to use a stronger roll?
- What helps me stop and control a ball safely?
- How do rules and routines help everyone stay safe during rolling games?
II. Objectives and Standards
Learning Objectives — Students will be able to:
- Roll a ball underhand toward a partner or target with improving accuracy and control.
- Stop and collect a rolling ball safely using hands, feet, or body control as taught.
- Adjust force based on whether a target is near or far.
- Follow class rules, routines, and safety procedures during partner and station activities.
Standards Alignment — 2nd Grade (SHAPE America-based custom)
- PE:S1.2c – Object Control: Throwing & Catching Throw objects (e.g., yarn balls, foam balls) underhand and overhand toward a target and catch objects thrown at an appropriate distance with increasing success.
- Example: Students throw a ball overhand toward a wall target and then catch a ball tossed by a partner from a short distance.
- PE:S2.2c – Effort & Force (Fast/Slow, Hard/Soft) Adjust speed, effort, and force (fast/slow, hard/soft) to match the demands of different movement tasks and games.
- Example: Students throw soft foam balls gently to a nearby partner and more firmly toward a distant target.
- PE:S4.2a – Rules, Routines, and Safety Follow established rules, procedures, and safety expectations in physical education and game settings.
- Example: Students wait for a signal before starting a relay and stay behind boundary lines when required.
Success Criteria — Student Language
- I can roll a ball underhand toward a target or partner.
- I can use a soft roll for a close target and a stronger roll for a far target.
- I can stop the ball safely and get it ready for the next turn.
- I can wait, take turns, and follow safety rules during rolling games.
