Unit Plan 33 (Grade 2 Social Studies): Caring for Our Planet and People
Teach students how reusing, reducing, and recycling protect land, water, animals, and people, as they identify local environmental problems and take simple civic actions to care for their community.
Focus: Help students understand that people can reuse, reduce, and recycle to care for the environment and protect land, water, animals, and people in their community.
Grade Level: 2
Subject Area: Social Studies (Geography • Inquiry/Civics)
Total Unit Duration: 5 sessions (one week), 30–45 minutes per session
I. Introduction
In this unit, students explore how their everyday choices affect the planet and people around them. They learn simple ways to reuse, reduce, and recycle to cut down on waste and protect local environments such as parks, playgrounds, and school grounds. Using pictures, short texts, and class discussions, students notice problems like litter or wasted materials, then work together to plan a small caring-for-our-planet action (posters, clean-up plan, or recycling reminder campaign).
Essential Questions
- How do people use and care for the land, water, and air in our community?
- What does it mean to reuse, reduce, and recycle, and how do these choices help our planet and people?
- What small actions can our class take to protect our environment at school or in our neighborhood?
- How can kids be helpers and show responsibility for the Earth every day?
II. Objectives and Standards
Learning Objectives — Students will be able to:
- Describe at least two ways people adapt to, use, and care for the local environment (e.g., throwing trash away, using less water, planting trees).
- Explain the ideas of reuse, reduce, and recycle using simple, real-life examples.
- Identify one local environmental problem (such as litter or wasted paper) using pictures, walk observations, or simple texts.
- Help plan a small class civic action (such as a poster campaign, classroom recycling plan, or mini clean-up) to care for the environment.
- Communicate what they learned through a simple action plan and visual (poster, pledge, or display) that encourages others to care for our planet and people.
Standards Alignment — 2nd Grade (C3-based custom)
- 2.C3.Geo.5 — Explain how people adapt to, use, and care for environments (resources, conservation).
- Example: Give two ways the community reduces waste or protects water.
- 2.C3.Inq.5 — Plan and participate in a small civic action informed by learning.
- Example: Design a poster campaign about crosswalk safety or recycling.
Success Criteria — Student Language
- I can tell how people use and care for the environment where we live.
- I can explain what it means to reuse, reduce, and recycle with real examples.
- I can help my class pick a problem (like litter or wasted paper) that we want to improve.
- I can plan and do a small caring action with my classmates to help our school or community.
- I can share my ideas in pictures and words so others know how to care for our planet and people.
