Unit Plan 13 (Grade 2 Social Studies): Cities, Suburbs, and Rural Places
Compare cities, suburbs, and rural communities by exploring their features, how people adapt to each environment, and simple ways everyone can help care for the planet.
Focus: Compare and contrast cities, suburbs, and rural places; identify their characteristics and explain how people use, adapt to, and care for their environments in different communities.
Grade Level: 2
Subject Area: Social Studies (Geography • Communities • Environment)
Total Unit Duration: 5 sessions (one week), 30–45 minutes per session
I. Introduction
In this unit, students explore three main types of communities: cities, suburbs, and rural places. Through pictures, short videos, and simple maps, they notice differences in buildings, transportation, land use, noise, and space. Students also learn that people in every community use resources, adapt to their environment, and can care for the land, air, and water by making good choices. By the end of the week, they create a simple “My Community & Others” comparison chart or mini-book that shows how different community types look, feel, and care for the environment.
Essential Questions
- What makes a city, suburb, and rural place the same and different?
- How do people live, work, and travel in different kinds of communities?
- How do people in all communities use and adapt to their environments (weather, space, resources)?
- What are some ways people can care for the environment in cities, suburbs, and rural places?
II. Objectives and Standards
Learning Objectives — Students will be able to:
- Identify and describe cities, suburbs, and rural places using pictures, maps, and simple charts.
- Compare at least two community types by noting differences in buildings, transportation, land use, and population.
- Explain how people adapt to and use their environments in different communities (e.g., tall buildings in cities, farms in rural areas).
- Name at least two ways people in any community can care for the environment (e.g., recycling, not littering, saving water).
- Create a comparison product (chart or mini-book) that shows similarities and differences among community types and includes one environment-care idea for each.
Standards Alignment — 2nd Grade (C3-based custom)
- 2.C3.Geo.1 — Identify and compare types of places (home, neighborhood, town/city, rural/suburban/urban).
- Example: List features you see more in cities vs. rural areas.
- 2.C3.Geo.5 — Explain how people adapt to, use, and care for environments (resources, conservation).
- Example: Give two ways the community reduces waste or protects water.
Success Criteria — Student Language
- I can tell the difference between a city, a suburb, and a rural place.
- I can name at least two features of each kind of community (for example, tall buildings in a city, farms in a rural area).
- I can explain one way people adapt to where they live (clothing, housing, transportation, land use).
- I can name at least two actions that help care for the environment in any community.
- I can make a chart or mini-book that compares cities, suburbs, and rural places and includes ideas for taking care of our world.
