Unit Plan 9 (Grade 2 Social Studies): My Neighborhood and Local Helpers
Explore local places, helpers, goods, and services as students map their neighborhood and learn how communities meet everyday needs through people, places, and economic roles.
Focus: Identify local places and helpers who meet community needs, and connect where we live (home, neighborhood, town/city) with goods and services we use every day.
Grade Level: 2
Subject Area: Social Studies (Geography • Economics • Community)
Total Unit Duration: 5 sessions (one week), 30–45 minutes per session
I. Introduction
In this unit, students explore their neighborhood and local community helpers. They learn to name different types of places (home, school, park, store, library) and sort them into neighborhood and town/city settings. Students discover how producers and consumers are part of their daily life and practice sorting goods and services. By the end of the week, they create a simple “My Neighborhood & Helpers” map or diagram that shows local places and helpers who meet community needs.
Essential Questions
- What is a neighborhood, and how is it part of our town or city?
- Who are the helpers in our community, and how do they help meet people’s needs?
- What are goods and services, and how do producers and consumers use them?
- How do the places and helpers in our neighborhood help us live, learn, and stay safe?
II. Objectives and Standards
Learning Objectives — Students will be able to:
- Identify and name local places (e.g., home, school, park, store, library, fire station) on a simple neighborhood or town map.
- Describe a neighborhood and compare it with other types of places (e.g., busier city area, quieter country area).
- Identify community helpers (e.g., teacher, firefighter, mail carrier, doctor, store worker) and explain how they help meet community needs.
- Sort picture cards into goods and services, and label people as producers and consumers in simple scenarios.
- Create a “My Neighborhood & Helpers” map or diagram showing local places and helpers, with labels for at least one good and one service.
