Unit Plan 2 (Grade 2 Social Studies): Rules at Home and in the Community

Focus: Compare classroom, home, and neighborhood/community rules; explore how rules and consequences in different places promote fairness and safety.

Grade Level: 2

Subject Area: Social Studies (Civics • Inquiry • Community)

Total Unit Duration: 5 sessions (one week), 30–45 minutes per session

I. Introduction

In this unit, students look beyond the classroom to learn about rules at home and in the community. They compare rules from different places—classroom, home, playground, streets, stores—and discuss how rules and consequences help people stay safe and treat each other fairly. Students gather information from simple sources like photos, short texts, maps, and interviews with family or school adults. By the end of the unit, they will create a small “Rules Around Us” chart or booklet that shows how rules work in different spaces to support fairness and safety.

Essential Questions

  • How are classroom rules similar to and different from rules at home and in our neighborhood?
  • How do rules and consequences in different places help keep people safe and fair?
  • What can we learn about rules by looking at photos, maps, and short texts, or by interviewing people?
  • How do rules help families and communities work and live together peacefully?

II. Objectives and Standards

Learning Objectives — Students will be able to:

  1. Name and describe at least one rule from home, from school, and from the community (e.g., crosswalks, playground rules).
  2. Explain how each rule helps with fairness or safety, and identify a possible consequence if it is not followed.
  3. Gather information about rules from simple sources such as photos, short texts, maps, or interviews with family or school adults.
  4. Compare and contrast classroom, home, and community rules using a Venn diagram or T-chart.
  5. Create a “Rules Around Us” chart/booklet that shows at least three rules (home, school, community) and explains how they help people.

Standards Alignment — 2nd Grade (C3-based custom)

  • 2.C3.Civ.1 — Explain how rules, laws, and consequences support fairness and safety.
    • Example: Compare a classroom rule to a community law (e.g., speed limits).
  • 2.C3.Inq.2 — Gather information from multiple simple sources (photos, maps, short texts, interviews).
    • Example: Use a children’s atlas, a local map, and a librarian interview to learn about services.

Success Criteria — Student Language

  • I can tell one rule from home, one from school, and one from the community.
  • I can explain how each rule helps keep people safe or fair and what might happen if people ignore it.
  • I can use pictures, short texts, maps, or interviews to learn more about rules in different places.
  • I can show how rules at home, school, and in the community are alike and different using a chart or diagram.
  • I can make a “Rules Around Us” page or booklet that someone else can read and understand.
