Unit Plan 5 (Grade 2 Social Studies): Symbols and Traditions of Our Nation
Explore U.S. and local symbols—like the flag, pledge, national songs, and holidays—and help second graders understand what they represent and why we honor them.
Focus: Recognize the U.S. flag, Pledge of Allegiance, national songs, and local symbols; discuss what these symbols and traditions represent and why people commemorate important holidays and events.
Grade Level: 2
Subject Area: Social Studies (Civics • History • Culture)
Total Unit Duration: 5 sessions (one week), 30–45 minutes per session
I. Introduction
In this unit, students explore important symbols and traditions of the United States and their local community. They learn to recognize the U.S. flag, Pledge of Allegiance, national songs (such as the national anthem), and local emblems like a state flag, city seal, or school mascot. Students also learn about holidays and special days (e.g., Veterans Day, Independence Day, Indigenous Peoples’ Day, Memorial Day) and talk about why people honor them. By the end of the week, they create a “Symbols and Traditions of Our Nation” booklet or poster that shows several symbols and explains what they stand for.
