Unit Plan 26 (Grade 3 ELA): Crafting Descriptive Narratives
Grade 3 ELA writing unit: revise small-moment narratives with precise word choice, vivid sensory details, figurative language, and satisfying closure in 5 days.

Focus: Revising for word choice and sensory details
Grade Level: 3
Subject Area: English Language Arts (Writing, Language)
Total Unit Duration: 5 sessions (one week), 45–60 minutes per session
I. Introduction
This week, writers strengthen small-moment narratives by revising for precise word choice and vivid sensory details, then finishing with a satisfying sense of closure. Students practice choosing words for effect, using simple figurative language appropriately, and shaping endings that feel complete. By Friday, each learner will submit a revised narrative that shows—not tells—the moment, uses purposeful language, and concludes clearly.
II. Objectives and Standards
Learning Objectives — Students will be able to…
- Add or refine sensory details and precise nouns/strong verbs so the moment is easy to picture.
- Use words and phrases for effect (e.g., vivid verbs, nuanced adjectives) and accurate, light figurative language to create imagery.
- Provide a sense of closure that fits the story (full-circle, reflective, or takeaway ending).
Standards Alignment — CCSS Grade 3
- Writing: W.3.3d (provide a sense of closure)
- Language: L.3.3a (choose words and phrases for effect)
- Language: L.3.5a–c (literal/nonliteral meanings; real-life connections; shades of meaning)
Success Criteria — student language
- I used specific nouns, strong verbs, and sensory words that help readers see/hear/feel my moment.
- I tried one small simile or metaphor (only if it helps) and chose words with the right shade of meaning.
- My ending fits the story and leaves the reader with a clear, finished feeling.
