Unit Plan 14 (Grade 3 ELA): Using Text Evidence to Support Opinions

Grade Level: 3

Subject Area: English Language Arts (Reading, Writing, Speaking & Listening, Language)

Total Unit Duration: 5 sessions (one week), 45–60 minutes per session

I. Introduction

This week strengthens opinion writing by teaching students to cite reasons and examples from readings. Learners practice forming an opinion about a text-dependent question, then backing it up with text evidence (quoted words or precise paraphrases with a where-found reference). They also use linking words to connect opinion and reasons, and polish grammar/usage in sentences. By Friday, students will read a short informational paragraph, state an opinion about it, and write a brief opinion paragraph that includes two evidence-backed reasons.

II. Objectives and Standards

Learning Objectives — Students will be able to…

  1. Ask and answer questions about a text and cite words or details that support their thinking.
  2. Write a clear opinion statement and supply relevant reasons supported by evidence from the text.
  3. Use linking words/phrases (because, for example, also, therefore) to connect opinion and reasons.
  4. Write in complete, grammatically correct sentences that follow grade-level conventions.

Standards Alignment — CCSS Grade 3

  • Reading Informational: RI.3.1 (refer explicitly to the text as the basis for answers)
  • Writing: W.3.1b–c (support opinion with reasons; use linking words/phrases)
  • Language: L.3.1 (command of grammar and usage)

Success Criteria — student language

  • I can write one sentence that states my opinion about the text question.
  • I can give two reasons and prove each with a quoted word/phrase or a precise paraphrase and where I found it.
  • I can use linking words so my paragraph flows.
  • My sentences are complete and use correct grammar/usage.
