Unit Plan 29 (Grade 3 PE): Cooperative Large-Group Games

Focus: Strengthen large-group cooperation, reinforce following multi-step rules, and build self-control through active whole-class game play.

Grade Level: 3

Subject Area: Physical Education (Large-Group GamesCooperation & RulesSelf-Control & Space Awareness)

Total Unit Duration: 1 core session + 2 optional sessions (1–3 weeks), 50–60 minutes per session

I. Introduction

Students explore cooperative large-group games as a way to move actively, work with many classmates at once, and practice following more complex rules in a fun game setting. In this unit, students begin with a circle jog and call-and-response stretches so they can warm up together, respond to group signals, and prepare for activities that require attention and shared movement. They then apply those skills in Capture the Treasure and Builders & Bulldozers, where students must use open space, follow clear roles, listen carefully to instructions, and respond calmly when the game changes quickly. Throughout the unit, students focus on safe positioning, teamwork, self-control, and learning that large-group games work best when everyone follows the rules and supports the group.

Essential Questions

  • How can I move safely in a large-group game with many players?
  • Why is following rules especially important in whole-class activities?
  • How can cooperation help a large-group game run better?
  • What does self-control look like when a game becomes exciting or frustrating?

II. Objectives and Standards

Learning Objectives — Students will be able to:

  1. Use personal and general space effectively during large-group movement games.
  2. Follow rules, boundaries, and equipment procedures consistently in whole-class activities.
  3. Cooperate with classmates by sharing roles, encouraging others, and helping the game run smoothly.
  4. Show self-control and emotional regulation when rules, outcomes, or game situations do not go their way.

Standards Alignment — 3rd Grade (SHAPE America-based custom)

  • PE:S2.3a – Space Awareness & Positioning Use knowledge of personal and general space to find open areas, avoid collisions, and position appropriately during games.
    • Example: In keep-away games, students move away from defenders to create open passing lanes.
  • PE:S4.3a – Rules, Routines, and Equipment Safety Consistently follow rules, procedures, and safety expectations, including proper use of equipment and respect for boundaries.
    • Example: Students wait for the signal to begin, stay within play zones, and handle equipment appropriately.
  • PE:S4.3b – Cooperation, Encouragement, and Teamwork Cooperate with partners and teams, share equipment, take turns, and encourage others.
    • Example: Students rotate through stations smoothly, give positive feedback to teammates, and help reset equipment.
  • PE:S4.3c – Self-Control & Emotional Regulation Demonstrate self-control, manage frustration, and respond appropriately when games do not go their way.
    • Example: Students remain calm when they are tagged out or lose a game and rejoin the activity without arguing.
