Unit Plan 22 (Grade 3 Social Studies): Important People in Local History

Focus: Research important people in local/regional history who shaped the community’s culture, growth, or development, and use evidence from sources to explain their contributions with simple citations (titles/authors).

Grade Level: 3

Subject Area: Social Studies (History • Inquiry/Research)

Total Unit Duration: 5 sessions (one week), 45–60 minutes per session

I. Introduction

In this unit, students become local history researchers who learn about real people from their community or region. They explore what makes someone “important” in history (helping others, building something, creating change, preserving culture). Students read short biographies, look at photos or artifacts, and gather information from multiple sources about one local figure. They then write and share a simple “Local History Hero” profile that explains who the person is, what they did, and why their contribution matters, using evidence and basic source citations.

Essential Questions

  • Who are some important people in our local or regional history, and what did they do?
  • How can we tell if someone made an important contribution to their community?
  • How do biographies, photos, and other sources help us learn about people from the past?
  • How can we use evidence from sources to explain why a person is important and give credit with simple citations?

II. Objectives and Standards

Learning Objectives — Students will be able to:

  1. Identify at least two significant people from local or regional history and describe their main contributions (what they did to help or change the community).
  2. Read simple biographical sources (short texts, fact sheets, or websites) and pull out key details: who, what, where, when, and why they matter.
  3. Choose one local historical figure to research more deeply, gathering information from at least two sources (e.g., biography, website, plaque, book excerpt).
  4. Use a “claim + evidence” structure to explain why their chosen person is important, citing source titles/authors in simple form (e.g., “According to ___”).
  5. Create and present a short “Local History Hero” profile (bio card/poster) that includes basic facts, contributions, and a supported claim about the person’s importance.

Standards Alignment — 3rd Grade (C3-based custom)

  • 3.C3.Hist.3 — Identify significant people, groups, and events in local/regional history and explain their contributions.
    • Example: Write a short bio card for a local leader or tradition.
  • 3.C3.Inq.4 — Use evidence to make claims and explanations; cite source titles or authors.
    • Example: Write a claim about why a river is important, citing a map and a park sign.

Success Criteria — Student Language

  • I can name at least one important person from our local or regional history.
  • I can explain what this person did and how it helped or changed the community.
  • I can gather information from more than one source about the same person.
  • I can make a claim like “This person is important because…” and support it with evidence from my sources.
  • I can include a simple citation by mentioning the title or author of my source in my writing or speaking.
