Unit Plan 33 (Grade 3 Social Studies): Stewardship and Conservation
Promote environmental stewardship as students explore how daily choices and simple projects help conserve natural resources and care for their community spaces.
Focus: Plan ways to care for the environment and use natural resources responsibly through everyday choices and simple class projects.
Grade Level: 3
Subject Area: Social Studies (Geography • Civics/Action)
Total Unit Duration: 5 sessions (one week), 45–60 minutes per session
I. Introduction
In this unit, students learn that they are stewards of the environment, not just users of resources. They explore how people adapt, modify, and conserve their surroundings and what it means to act as responsible caretakers. Using photos, brief readings, and local examples, students investigate environmental problems (litter, wasted water, pollution) and design simple stewardship actions such as posters, reminders, or class routines. By the end of the week, they will create a small Conservation Action Plan to help care for a place they know.
Essential Questions
- How do people affect the environment in positive and negative ways?
- What does it mean to be a steward of the environment?
- How can we conserve resources like water, energy, and land in our school and community?
- How can kids communicate ideas to encourage others to care for the environment?
II. Objectives and Standards
Learning Objectives — Students will be able to:
- Describe examples of how people adapt to, modify, and conserve the environment in their community.
- Identify at least two environmental problems (e.g., litter, wasted water, pollution) and explain why they are a concern.
- Propose stewardship actions—simple steps students and families can take to care for local parks, school grounds, or neighborhoods.
- Work with classmates to create a Conservation Action Plan for a specific place (classroom, hallway, playground, park).
- Use a poster, slide, letter, or mini-podcast to communicate their conservation ideas and encourage others to act.
Standards Alignment — 3rd Grade (C3-based custom)
- 3.C3.Geo.5 — Analyze human–environment interaction (adapt, modify, conserve) and propose stewardship actions.
- Example: Recommend two ways to reduce litter at a local park and justify with evidence.
- 3.C3.Inq.5 — Communicate conclusions and propose informed actions (posters, slides, letters, podcasts).
- Example: Create a class PSA about crosswalk safety with two evidence-based reasons.
Success Criteria — Student Language
- I can give examples of how people adapt to, change, and protect the environment.
- I can explain why a local environmental problem (like litter or wasted water) matters.
- I can list at least two actions kids can take to conserve resources or care for a place.
- I can help create a Conservation Action Plan for our classroom or community.
- I can share our ideas using a poster, slides, letter, or recording that encourages others to help.
