Unit Plan 2 (Grade 4 Art): Brainstorming & Sketchbook Practice
Grade 4 art unit where students use sketchbooks as idea labs to brainstorm, observe, sketch thumbnails, and plan future artworks with confidence and creativity.
Focus: Generate artistic ideas through sketching, observation, and planning using a sketchbook as an “idea lab.”
Grade Level: 4
Subject Area: Art (Visual Arts • Creating)
Total Unit Duration: 1–3 weeks, 50–60 minutes per session
I. Introduction
Students learn to treat their sketchbooks as safe places to explore ideas, make mistakes, and capture thoughts before starting larger artworks. They practice using brainstorming strategies—word lists, doodles, and thumbnail sketches—based on themes, observations from real life, and personal interests. By the end of the unit, students will have a set of planned ideas in their sketchbooks that they can return to throughout the year when starting new art projects.
Essential Questions
- How can a sketchbook help me collect and grow my art ideas?
- What are some ways to brainstorm ideas using themes, observations, and personal interests?
- Why is it helpful to make thumbnail sketches and plans before starting a big artwork?
- How can I use my sketchbook to feel more confident when I don’t know what to draw?
