Unit Plan 15 (Grade 4 ELA): Performance Reading & Fluency

Focus: Prosody, phrasing, repeated reading, performing poems

Grade Level: 4

Subject Area: English Language Arts (Foundational Skills, Speaking & Listening)

Total Unit Duration: 5 sessions (one week), 45–60 minutes per session

I. Introduction

This week turns readers into performers. Students build fluency by practicing phrasing and prosody (expression, intonation, stress) through repeated reading of short prose and poems. They’ll learn to use context and punctuation to self-correct and choose a pace that matches meaning. By Friday, each learner will deliver a polished oral reading of a poem with clear voice, phrasing, and expression—and show measurable growth in accuracy and rate.

II. Objectives and Standards

Learning Objectives — Students will be able to…

  1. Read grade-level text with accuracy, appropriate rate, and expression, adjusting phrasing and volume for meaning.
  2. Use context and punctuation to self-correct miscues; reread to confirm understanding.
  3. Rehearse and perform poems with clear diction, audience awareness, and purposeful delivery.

Standards Alignment — CCSS Grade 4

  • RF.4.4a–c (read with accuracy/fluency; read prose/poetry orally with appropriate rate and expression; use context to confirm or self-correct, rereading as necessary)
  • SL.4.4 (present information in an organized manner; speak clearly at an understandable pace)
  • SL.4.6 (adapt speech to context; use formal English when appropriate)

Success Criteria — student language

  • I can read a poem with smooth phrasing and expression that fits the meaning.
  • I can fix an error by using context and punctuation clues, then reread.
  • I can present to an audience with clear volume, pace, and eye contact.
