Unit Plan 12 (Grade 4 ELA): Revising Organization & Conclusions
Grade 4 writing unit: revise for cohesion, transitions, and conclusions while fixing sentence errors—build clear, polished paragraphs with logical flow and correct punctuation.
Focus: Cohesion, transitions, strong conclusions; sentence control
Grade Level: 4
Subject Area: English Language Arts (Writing, Language)
Total Unit Duration: 5 sessions (one week), 45–60 minutes per session
I. Introduction
This revision-focused week helps writers tighten organization, smooth connections with purposeful transitions, and craft strong conclusions that echo the claim and audience. Students also tune up sentence control—fixing fragments/run-ons and applying key conventions for clarity. By Friday, each learner will revise an opinion paragraph (from prior weeks) so ideas flow logically, reasons are connected with effective transitions, the conclusion clearly wraps the argument, and sentences are correct and readable.
II. Objectives and Standards
Learning Objectives — Students will be able to…
- Diagnose and improve organization and cohesion in an opinion paragraph (grouping related ideas; logical order).
- Use transitions to connect claim → reasons → evidence and guide the reader.
- Write a concluding statement that follows from reasons and fits the audience and purpose.
- Revise and edit with checklists and peer feedback; correct sentence errors (fragments/run-ons) and apply punctuation/capitalization correctly.
Standards Alignment — CCSS Grade 4
- W.4.1d (provide a concluding statement or section)
- W.4.5 (develop and strengthen writing by planning, revising, and editing with guidance)
