Unit Plan 18 (Grade 4 ELA): Sharing Findings Clearly
Grade 4 presentation unit: plan and deliver short talks with slides or posters using precise language, clear visuals, and confident pacing for audience impact.
Focus: Oral presentations with visuals; precise language choices
Grade Level: 4
Subject Area: English Language Arts (Speaking & Listening, Writing/Technology, Language)
Total Unit Duration: 5 sessions (one week), 45–60 minutes per session
I. Introduction
This week turns researchers into clear communicators. Students plan and deliver short oral presentations using simple slides or posters that highlight key findings. They’ll choose precise language and formal/informal tone to fit the audience, rehearse delivery skills (pace, volume, articulation, eye contact), and use technology to produce and share their work. By Friday, each learner will present findings supported by a purposeful visual and clear wording that helps listeners understand and remember the big ideas.
II. Objectives and Standards
Learning Objectives — Students will be able to…
- Organize and deliver a clear, sequenced presentation with relevant facts and details, speaking at an understandable pace (SL.4.4).
- Add and explain visuals (images/diagrams/charts) that strengthen the main ideas (SL.4.5).
- Adapt speech to context and task; use formal English when appropriate and adjust tone/word choice for audience (SL.4.6, L.4.3).
- Use technology (slides or digital poster) to produce/publish the presentation with teacher guidance (W.4.6).
Standards Alignment — CCSS Grade 4
- SL.4.4–SL.4.6 (present information clearly; add visual displays; adapt speech/formal English)
- W.4.6 (use technology to produce/publish)
- L.4.3 (use knowledge of language and its conventions when writing/speaking—choose words/phrases to convey ideas precisely)
Success Criteria — student language
- My talk has a beginning, middle, end and stays focused on the main idea.
- My visual is easy to read, labeled, and I explain how it supports the idea.
- I use precise words, a tone that fits the audience, and speak with clear pace and volume.
- My slides/poster follow simple design rules (few words, big fonts, high-contrast images).
