Unit Plan 11 (Grade 4 PE): Cooperative Challenges & Team Problem Solving

Focus: Strengthen communication, shared decision-making, leadership, and persistence through cooperative tasks that require students to solve problems together.

Grade Level: 4

Subject Area: Physical Education (Cooperative GamesTeamworkProblem Solving & Leadership)

Total Unit Duration: 1 core session + 2 optional sessions (1–3 weeks), 50–60 minutes per session

I. Introduction

Students explore Physical Education as a place where success can come from thinking together, listening well, and solving problems as a team. In this unit, students begin with partner mirror movements and group stretching circles so they can practice attention, body control, and responding to others. They then move into cooperative challenges such as Cross the River, Hula Hoop Chain, and Human Knot, where the group must make plans, test ideas, revise when something does not work, and keep working respectfully through frustration. Throughout the unit, students focus on communication, leadership, shared responsibility, and the idea that challenging tasks often become more satisfying when the whole group helps solve them.

Essential Questions

  • How does strong communication help a group solve a challenge?
  • What does good leadership look like during a cooperative task?
  • How can teams use shared decision-making when there are many ideas?
  • Why is persistence important when a challenge does not work the first time?

II. Objectives and Standards

Learning Objectives — Students will be able to:

  1. Work cooperatively with classmates by listening, encouraging others, and sharing team roles during group challenges.
  2. Use agreed-upon problem-solving and conflict-resolution strategies to keep the group working productively.
  3. Demonstrate responsibility by staying on task, using equipment appropriately, and persisting through difficult tasks.
  4. Reflect on which cooperative activities feel enjoyable or satisfying and explain why.

Standards Alignment — 4th Grade (SHAPE America-based custom)

  • PE:S4.4b – Cooperation, Leadership, and Team Roles Work cooperatively with classmates, accept and share roles (captain, scorekeeper, equipment manager), and demonstrate inclusive leadership.
    • Example: During small-sided games, students rotate roles fairly, encourage quieter peers to participate, and help organize teams.
  • PE:S4.4d – Conflict Resolution & Problem-Solving Use agreed-upon strategies (e.g., rock-paper-scissors, replaying a point, group discussion) to resolve conflicts and keep activities running smoothly.
    • Example: When players disagree about an out-of-bounds call, they use rock-paper-scissors to decide and immediately resume play.
  • PE:S4.4e – Responsibility, Effort, and Self-Direction Take responsibility for effort, behavior, and equipment (setting up, cleaning up, staying on task) and work productively without constant teacher direction.
    • Example: Students transition quickly between stations, take care of equipment, and persist with challenging tasks without giving up.
  • PE:S5.4a – Enjoyment & Preference for Activity Types Express enjoyment of various physical activities and identify personal favorites, explaining why they are fun or satisfying.
    • Example: Students share that they enjoy basketball because they like teamwork and fast-paced play, or dance because of music and expression.

Success Criteria — Student Language

  • I can help my group by listening, sharing ideas, and doing my role.
  • I can help solve disagreements in a calm and fair way.
  • I can keep trying even when the challenge is difficult.
  • I can explain why a cooperative activity feels fun, satisfying, or interesting to me.
