Unit Plan 9 (Grade 4 PE): Dance, Rhythm, & Choreography

Focus: Develop coordination to rhythm, strengthen memory for movement patterns, and use dance as expression through line dances and student-created choreography.

Grade Level: 4

Subject Area: Physical Education (Dance & RhythmMovement ExpressionPattern & Performance)

Total Unit Duration: 1 core session + 2 optional sessions (1–3 weeks), 50–60 minutes per session

I. Introduction

Students explore dance as a way to move with rhythm, show creativity, and work together through shared patterns. In this unit, students begin with clap-stomp patterns and simple 8-count sequences to music so they can practice listening for a beat, matching movements to timing, and remembering short movement phrases. They then build confidence through teacher-led line dances before creating short group routines of their own. Throughout the unit, students focus on coordinated movement, body control, expressive choices, and the idea that dance can be active, enjoyable, and meaningful in many different ways.

Essential Questions

  • How can I match my movement to a beat or rhythm?
  • What helps me remember a short dance pattern or 8-count sequence?
  • How can movement be used for expression as well as exercise?
  • Why can dance be enjoyable, energizing, and socially positive?

II. Objectives and Standards

Learning Objectives — Students will be able to:

  1. Perform locomotor and rhythmic movements with control while following dance patterns and sequences.
  2. Stay actively engaged during dance warm-ups, line dances, and choreography tasks for most of class time.
  3. Identify dance and rhythm activities they enjoy and explain why those activities feel fun or satisfying.
  4. Explain how dance and regular movement can support physical health, mood, and social connection.
  5. Create and perform a short group dance routine using repeated movement patterns and 8-count structure.

Standards Alignment — 4th Grade (SHAPE America-based custom)

  • PE:S1.4a – Locomotor Skills in Dynamic Games Perform locomotor skills (run, hop, jump, leap, slide, gallop, skip) with control and efficiency while changing speed and direction in game situations.
    • Example: Students use controlled sprinting, stopping, and quick changes of direction during tag, invasion games, or chasing/fleeing activities.
  • PE:S3.4a – Active Participation in MVPA Participate actively in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) for most of the class, minimizing off-task time.
    • Example: During fitness circuits, stations, or games, students remain engaged and moving rather than standing and watching others.
  • PE:S5.4a – Enjoyment & Preference for Activity Types Express enjoyment of various physical activities and identify personal favorites, explaining why they are fun or satisfying.
    • Example: Students share that they enjoy basketball because they like teamwork and fast-paced play, or dance because of music and expression.
  • PE:S5.4b – Health, Mental, and Social Benefits Explain how regular physical activity can improve physical health (strength, endurance, healthy weight), mental well-being (reduced stress, improved mood), and social connections (friendships, teamwork).
    • Example: Students describe feeling happier and calmer after active play and note that games help them make friends.
