Unit Plan 32 (Grade 4 PE): Outdoor Recreation & Frisbee Golf

Focus: Develop aiming and throwing accuracy, improve control of force for distance, and help students recognize outdoor recreation as a healthy and enjoyable way to stay active now and in the future.

Grade Level: 4

Subject Area: Physical Education (Outdoor RecreationFrisbee GolfLifelong Activity)

Total Unit Duration: 1 core session + 2 optional sessions (1–3 weeks), 50–60 minutes per session

I. Introduction

Students explore Frisbee golf as an outdoor recreation activity that combines movement, focus, strategy, and lifelong fitness. In this unit, students begin with Frisbee throws to safe targets at different distances and heights so they can practice accuracy, release angle, and force control. They then apply those skills in a Frisbee Golf Course set up around the field or gym, playing individually or in pairs while tracking their number of strokes at each target. Throughout the unit, students focus on aiming carefully, adjusting throws to the challenge of each hole, and understanding that outdoor recreation activities like Frisbee golf, walking, hiking, and biking can be enjoyable options for staying active beyond PE class.

Essential Questions

  • How can I throw a Frisbee with better accuracy toward a target?
  • How do I change force and throwing angle for short versus long throws?
  • Why is Frisbee golf a good example of an activity people can enjoy throughout life?
  • Where can students find opportunities to be active through outdoor recreation at school, home, or in the community?

II. Objectives and Standards

Learning Objectives — Students will be able to:

  1. Throw a Frisbee with improving accuracy toward different targets and distances.
  2. Adjust force, angle, and timing to match the demands of each Frisbee golf hole.
  3. Describe healthy choices that support physical activity, such as hydration, sleep, and regular movement.
  4. Identify Frisbee golf and other outdoor recreation activities as lifelong physical activity options.
  5. Recognize and discuss ways to be active at school, at home, and in the community.

Standards Alignment — 4th Grade (SHAPE America-based custom)

  • PE:S1.4c – Throwing & Catching with Accuracy Throw (overhand and underhand) and catch objects with accuracy and consistency while both partners or players are moving.
    • Example: Students complete passing patterns in small-sided games, leading a moving teammate with an accurate throw.
  • PE:S2.4c – Adjusting Effort, Force, and Timing Adjust speed, force, and timing of movements and skills to match the demands of the task (distance, target size, defender pressure).
    • Example: Students throw softly to a nearby teammate and more forcefully to a distant target, or time their jump to catch a thrown ball at its peak.
  • PE:S3.4e – Healthy Lifestyle Choices Describe daily choices that support physical health, such as regular physical activity, adequate sleep, hydration, and balanced screen time.
    • Example: Students list being active at recess, walking a pet, and limiting screen time as part of a healthy daily routine.
  • PE:S5.4c – Identifying Lifelong Physical Activities Identify physical activities they can participate in now and into adulthood (e.g., walking, biking, swimming, hiking, recreational sports, dance).
    • Example: Students list biking, jogging, swimming, and family walks as things they can continue beyond school.
  • PE:S5.4d – Seeking & Using Physical Activity Opportunities Recognize and seek out opportunities to be active at school (recess, clubs, walking programs) and at home or in the community (parks, teams, neighborhood play).
    • Example: Students mention joining a youth sports team, riding bikes in the neighborhood, or using a local park as ways to be active.

Success Criteria — Student Language

  • I can aim a Frisbee more carefully at a target.
  • I can change how hard I throw based on how far away the target is.
  • I can explain healthy choices that help me stay ready to be active.
  • I can identify Frisbee golf and other outdoor activities as lifelong options.
  • I can name places and opportunities where I can be active outside PE.
