Unit Plan 23 (Grade 4 PE): Team Handball Concepts & Games

Focus: Develop passing to open players, improve the timing of cuts and pivot passes, strengthen shooting from good angles, and build safe defending without contact through small-sided team handball.

Grade Level: 4

Subject Area: Physical Education (Team HandballInvasion GamesOffense & Defense)

Total Unit Duration: 1 core session + 2 optional sessions (1–3 weeks), 50–60 minutes per session

I. Introduction

Students explore team handball as an invasion game that depends on passing, movement, spacing, and smart decision-making. In this unit, students begin with passing and catching on the move and quick pivot passes so they can learn how to control the ball while finding open teammates. They then apply those skills in 3v3 or 4v4 Team Handball with restricted dribbles or no dribble so students must rely on passing, cutting, and moving into space instead of holding the ball too long. Throughout the unit, students focus on leading passes to open players, timing cuts, choosing strong shooting angles, and defending with footwork and body position rather than contact.

Essential Questions

  • How can I pass to a teammate who is moving into open space?
  • Why is it important to cut at the right time instead of standing still?
  • What makes a shooting angle better in team handball?
  • How can I play strong defense without pushing, grabbing, or making contact?

II. Objectives and Standards

Learning Objectives — Students will be able to:

  1. Throw and catch a ball with improving accuracy while moving in game-like situations.
  2. Combine skills in sequence, such as catch → pivot → pass → cut to space → receive → shoot.
  3. Apply simple offensive strategies such as passing to open teammates, cutting at the right time, and taking higher-percentage shots.
  4. Apply simple defensive strategies such as staying between an opponent and the goal, marking safely, and attempting legal interceptions.
  5. Stay actively engaged in team handball warm-ups and games for most of class time.
  6. Follow class rules and safety expectations consistently during small-sided handball games.

Standards Alignment — 4th Grade (SHAPE America-based custom)

  • PE:S1.4c – Throwing & Catching with Accuracy Throw (overhand and underhand) and catch objects with accuracy and consistency while both partners or players are moving.
    • Example: Students complete passing patterns in small-sided games, leading a moving teammate with an accurate throw.
  • PE:S1.4f – Combining Skills in Game Sequences Combine multiple skills (dribble, pass, catch, shoot, strike, run, dodge) in game-like sequences with basic fluidity.
    • Example: In handball lead-up games, students catch a pass, take a few steps to open space, and then pass or shoot toward a goal.
  • PE:S2.4d – Offensive Strategies in Small-Sided Games Demonstrate basic offensive strategies such as moving without the ball, creating passing lanes, using give-and-go plays, and choosing high-percentage shots.
    • Example: In a 3v3 basketball or soccer game, students cut to open space to receive a pass and choose appropriate times to shoot.
  • PE:S2.4e – Defensive Strategies & Position Play Demonstrate basic defensive ideas such as maintaining proper position (between opponent and goal), marking a player, and attempting legal interceptions.
    • Example: A student stays between an opponent and the goal in handball or soccer, trying to block shots or intercept passes without fouling.
  • PE:S3.4a – Active Participation in MVPA Participate actively in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) for most of the class, minimizing off-task time.
    • Example: During fitness circuits, stations, or games, students remain engaged and moving rather than standing and watching others.
  • PE:S4.4a – Consistent Rule-Following & Safety Consistently follow game rules, class procedures, and equipment safety guidelines without frequent reminders.
    • Example: Students wait for the teacher’s signal to begin, respect boundaries, and use sticks, balls, and scooters safely.

Success Criteria — Student Language

  • I can pass and catch while moving instead of always standing still.
  • I can pivot and find an open teammate before I throw.
  • I can cut into space to help my team attack.
  • I can defend by staying in position and using my feet instead of contact.
  • I can follow handball rules and stay active during the whole lesson.
