Unit Plan 20 (Grade 4 PE): Yoga Flow & Balance Challenges
Explore Grade 4 PE yoga and balance lessons that build body control, stability, breathing awareness, and calm movement for wellness and stress reduction.
Focus: Develop static and dynamic balance, improve body control, and help students understand how calm movement and breathing can support stress reduction and overall well-being.
Grade Level: 4
Subject Area: Physical Education (Yoga & Balance • Body Control • Mind-Body Wellness)
Total Unit Duration: 1 core session + 2 optional sessions (1–3 weeks), 50–60 minutes per session
I. Introduction
Students explore how slower, more controlled movement can build strength, stability, focus, and calm. In this unit, students begin with breath work and gentle stretches for the neck, shoulders, and hamstrings so they can notice how breathing and movement work together. They then move into yoga flow sequences and balance courses using lines, low beams, and other teacher-approved balance surfaces to practice holding positions, transitioning smoothly, and staying centered. Throughout the unit, students focus on posture, balance, body awareness, and the idea that movement can help the body feel stronger while also helping the mind feel calmer.
Essential Questions
- How can balance and body control improve through slower, more careful movement?
- What helps me stay stable when I move from one pose or surface to another?
- How can breathing and movement help reduce stress or help me feel calmer?
- What body signals can help me understand whether an activity feels light, moderate, or more challenging?
II. Objectives and Standards
Learning Objectives — Students will be able to:
- Demonstrate balance, stability, and body control during yoga poses and balance course activities.
- Stay actively engaged during yoga flow and balance work for most of class time.
- Use simple body signals such as breathing and effort level to describe how movement feels.
- Explain how yoga and controlled movement can support physical health, mood, and stress reduction.
Standards Alignment — 4th Grade (SHAPE America-based custom)
- PE:S1.4b – Balance, Stability, and Body Control Demonstrate static and dynamic balance and stability on a variety of surfaces and while transitioning between movements.
- Example: Students walk forward and backward on a low beam, then step immediately into a single-leg balance or controlled jump.
- PE:S3.4a – Active Participation in MVPA Participate actively in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) for most of the class, minimizing off-task time.
- Example: During fitness circuits, stations, or games, students remain engaged and moving rather than standing and watching others.
- PE:S3.4b – Monitoring Intensity & Body Signals Use simple methods (talk test, perceived exertion, heart rate checks) to monitor exercise intensity and recognize when activity is light, moderate, or vigorous.
- Example: Students perform short running intervals, then describe whether they can talk easily, talk with effort, or need a pause to breathe.
- PE:S5.4b – Health, Mental, and Social Benefits Explain how regular physical activity can improve physical health (strength, endurance, healthy weight), mental well-being (reduced stress, improved mood), and social connections (friendships, teamwork).
- Example: Students describe feeling happier and calmer after active play and note that games help them make friends.
Success Criteria — Student Language
- I can hold a pose or move through a balance challenge with better control.
- I can stay focused on my breathing and body position while I move.
- I can describe whether an activity feels light, moderate, or more challenging.
- I can explain how yoga or balance activities can help my body and my mood.
