Unit Plan 33 (Grade 5 Art): Craftsmanship Focus Workshop
Grade 5 art revision unit where students refine technique and detail by using teacher and peer feedback to improve craftsmanship, clarity, and technical quality.
Focus: Strengthen technique and detail precision by revising artwork based on teacher and peer feedback to improve clarity and technical quality.
Grade Level: 5
Subject Area: Art (Visual Arts • Creating/Refining)
Total Unit Duration: 1–3 weeks, 50–60 minutes per session
I. Introduction
Students zoom in on craftsmanship—how carefully and skillfully artwork is made—by revisiting one or more of their own pieces. They learn to look closely at edges, details, shading, color application, glue work, and line quality, then use feedback and checklists to plan revisions. Rather than starting something new, students practice becoming “art editors,” making focused changes that improve clarity, detail, and technical quality so their ideas read more strongly to viewers.
Essential Questions
- What does strong craftsmanship look like in finished artwork?
- How can revising my artwork make my message, story, or design clearer to viewers?
- How can I use teacher and peer feedback to decide what to improve?
- Why is it important for artists to slow down and refine details, not just finish the first version of a piece?
II. Objectives and Standards
Learning Objectives — Students will be able to:
- Describe specific aspects of craftsmanship (neat edges, smooth coloring/painting, careful gluing, clear lines, controlled shading).
- Use a craftsmanship checklist and peer/teacher feedback to identify at least two areas for improvement in their own artwork.
- Revise artwork by making focused changes that improve clarity, detail, and technical quality.
- Explain one or more revision choices they made and how these changes improved the piece.
- Reflect on how a revision mindset can help them in future art projects.
Standards Alignment — 5th Grade (NCAS-Aligned)
- VA:Cr3.5a — Revise artwork using teacher and peer feedback to improve clarity, detail, and technical quality.
- Example: Students refine shading to create stronger depth.
Success Criteria — Student Language
- I can name what craftsmanship looks like (and does not look like) in our classroom.
- I can use a checklist and feedback to find at least two things to improve in my artwork.
- I can make specific revisions (like cleaning edges, sharpening details, or smoothing color) that improve my piece.
- I can explain how my revisions made my artwork clearer or more polished.
- I can describe how I will use a revision mindset in my future art projects.
