Grade 5 fluency and performance unit: build phrasing, accuracy, and expressive prosody through repeated readings; rehearse poems for confident, audience-ready delivery.

Focus: Prosody, phrasing, repeated reading, performing poems
Grade Level: 5
Subject Area: English Language Arts (Foundational Skills, Speaking & Listening)
Total Unit Duration: 5 sessions (one week), 45–60 minutes per session
I. Introduction
This week, readers become performers. Students will develop fluency—accurate word reading, phrasing that honors punctuation, and expressive prosody—through repeated practice with short texts. They’ll rehearse voice techniques (pace, pause, pitch, power), apply self-corrections using context, and prepare a brief poetry performance with a clear, audience-ready delivery. By Friday, each learner presents a short poem or reader’s-theater excerpt with accuracy, phrasing, and appropriate speaking style.
II. Objectives and Standards

- Adapt speech to the task and audience, using appropriate volume, pace, and formal English as needed (SL.5.6).
