Unit Plan 24 (Grade 5 Orchestra): Personal Musical Goals

Focus: Reflect on musical progress and set personal goals as a string player, connecting interests, habits, and ensemble responsibilities.

Grade Level: 5

Subject Area: Orchestra (Performance • Technique • Literacy/Listening • Creativity • Connections)

Total Unit Duration: 1–2 weeks, 30-minute sessions

I. Introduction

Students pause to reflect on their first experiences as string players—what they enjoy, what feels challenging, and how they have grown. Through guided discussions, checklists, and simple self-assessments, they identify strengths, areas for growth, and the habits that help or hurt progress (practice routines, posture, listening to others). Students then set one or two personal musical goals and create clear action steps they can use in orchestra and at home.

Essential Questions

  • How do my interests, effort, and habits affect my growth as a string player?
  • What does a strong musical goal look and sound like, and how is it different from a wish?
  • How can I use reflection and feedback to keep improving on my instrument?

II. Objectives and Standards

Learning Objectives — Students will be able to:

  1. Identify at least one strength and one area for growth in their string playing (tone, bowing, posture, rhythm, or note reading).
  2. Describe personal musical interests (favorite sounds, songs, roles) and how these influence what they want to improve.
  3. Write one or two specific, realistic goals and related action steps for orchestra and/or home practice.
  4. Explain how practice habits and rehearsal behavior support or slow down musical growth.
  5. Create a Personal Musical Goal Plan that includes goals, reasons, and action steps, and share it with a partner or the teacher.

Standards Alignment — Grade 5 Orchestra (custom, NAfME-style)

  • OR:Cn10.5a — Describe how personal interests and goals influence instrument choice and musical growth as a string player.
    • Example: Students explain why they chose violin, viola, cello, or bass and set one goal.

Success Criteria — Student Language

  • I can name at least one strength and one area for growth on my instrument.
  • I can explain how my interests (what I like to play or listen to) connect to my goals.
  • I can write a clear goal and action steps that I can actually do in orchestra or at home.
  • I can describe how my practice and rehearsal habits help me get closer to my goals.
