Unit Plan 33 (Grade 5 PE): Choice Sports & Student-Led Stations
Explore Grade 5 PE choice-based unit plans that build leadership, student voice, engagement, and lifelong physical activity connections through flexible station learning.
Focus: Build self-direction, strengthen leadership, help students identify favorite activities, and connect personal choices to lifelong physical activity through student-led choice stations.
Grade Level: 5
Subject Area: Physical Education (Choice & Voice • Leadership • Lifelong Activity Connections)
Total Unit Duration: 1 core session + 2 optional sessions (1–3 weeks), 50–60 minutes per session
I. Introduction
Students explore how choice can increase motivation, responsibility, and long-term interest in physical activity. In this unit, students begin with a student-chosen warm-up block using a menu of cardio and mobility options so they can practice making safe, purposeful decisions about how to prepare their bodies for movement. They then move into choice stations such as soccer, basketball shooting, jump rope, dancing, yoga, frisbee, and wall games, with selected students helping lead and organize each area. Throughout the unit, students learn that being active does not have to look the same for everyone. Instead, students reflect on which activities they enjoy, how leadership helps a station run well, and how personal interests can connect to staying active at school, at home, and in the community.
Essential Questions
- How can making choices about activity help me stay more motivated and engaged in PE?
- What does strong student leadership look like at an activity station?
- How can I tell which physical activities I enjoy most and why?
- How do activity choices in PE connect to lifelong physical activity outside of school?
II. Objectives and Standards
Learning Objectives — Students will be able to:
- Participate actively in chosen stations and remain engaged in movement for significant portions of class.
- Demonstrate leadership and cooperation by helping organize, explain, or support activity stations.
- Show responsibility by making safe choices, transitioning efficiently, and using equipment correctly without constant reminders.
- Identify physical activities they enjoy and explain why those activities match their interests or strengths.
- Recognize which activities could become lifelong physical activity choices and where they might find opportunities to do them outside PE.
- Make simple plans for being active regularly at school, home, or in the community.
Standards Alignment — 5th Grade (SHAPE America-based custom)
- PE:S3.5a – Sustained Participation in Moderate-to-Vigorous Activity Participate actively and continuously in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) for significant portions of class without frequent off-task behavior.
- Example: During fitness circuits or small-sided games, students remain engaged and moving, minimizing standing time between turns.
- PE:S4.5b – Cooperation, Leadership, and Inclusive Team Behavior Work cooperatively with classmates, take on and rotate leadership roles, and actively include others regardless of skill level or background.
- Example: During group games, students volunteer as captains or equipment managers, ensure everyone has a role, and invite quieter classmates to join.
- PE:S4.5e – Responsibility, Effort, and Self-Directed Behavior Show responsibility by arriving prepared, using time efficiently, caring for equipment, and staying engaged without constant teacher direction.
- Example: Students rotate through stations on their own, transition quickly when signaled, and clean up equipment at the end of class.
- PE:S5.5a – Enjoyment and Preference for Specific Activities Identify physical activities they enjoy, explain why they prefer them, and show enthusiasm and effort during those activities.
- Example: Students share that they enjoy basketball because of teamwork and pace, or running club because they like pushing themselves and seeing progress.
- PE:S5.5c – Identifying Lifelong Physical Activities Identify physical activities they can participate in independently and throughout life (e.g., walking, running, cycling, swimming, hiking, recreational sports, dance, fitness training).
- Example: Students list activities such as biking, swimming, hiking, or joining a community sports league as ways to stay active beyond elementary school.
- PE:S5.5d – Seeking and Using Opportunities to Be Active Recognize and seek out opportunities for physical activity in school, at home, and in the community, and make simple plans to be active regularly.
- Example: Students talk about joining after-school sports, using a neighborhood park, walking a dog, or choosing active games at recess.
