Unit Plan 17 (Grade 5 PE): Scooter Games & Core Strength

Grade 5 scooter PE unit plan on scooter safety, core stability, balance, and student responsibility through relays, games, and controlled movement.

Unit Plan 17 (Grade 5 PE): Scooter Games & Core Strength

Focus: Build safe equipment use, improve core stability while moving, and develop student responsibility for following and reinforcing scooter safety expectations during cooperative and competitive scooter activities.

Grade Level: 5

Subject Area: Physical Education (Movement SkillsCore StabilitySafety & Responsibility)

Total Unit Duration: 1 core session + 2 optional sessions (1–3 weeks), 50–60 minutes per session

I. Introduction

Students use scooters as a fun but highly structured way to build body control, core strength, and responsible behavior. This unit teaches students how to sit, kneel, balance, push, stop, and turn on scooters while keeping hands, feet, and eyes in safe positions. Through core-activation exercises, defined-lane scooter relays, and modified Scooter Hockey or Scooter Tag, students learn that successful scooter play depends on more than speed. It requires balance, stability, safe transitions, and strong attention to class rules. The unit also gives students chances to take on simple leadership jobs, such as acting as student refs or safety spotters, so they learn to help the whole class stay safe and organized.

Essential Questions

  • What does it look like to use scooters safely and responsibly in PE?
  • How does core strength help me balance, steer, stop, and move on a scooter?
  • Why do clear rules, boundaries, and student safety leadership matter during scooter activities?
  • How can I stay active, focused, and in control while using fast-moving equipment?

II. Objectives and Standards

Learning Objectives — Students will be able to:

  1. Move on scooters with control, using safe starts, stops, turns, and lane travel.
  2. Demonstrate balance, stability, and coordination while riding, kneeling, sitting, turning, or reaching during scooter tasks.
  3. Consistently follow scooter safety rules, class procedures, and boundaries, and help remind peers about safe behavior.
  4. Show responsibility and self-direction by transitioning efficiently, using equipment properly, staying engaged, and taking care of materials.
  5. Apply safe and controlled movement skills during scooter relays, scooter games, and core-strength activities.

Standards Alignment — 5th Grade (SHAPE America-based custom)

  • PE:S1.5a – Locomotor Skills with Speed, Control, and Transitions Perform locomotor movements (run, hop, jump, leap, slide, gallop, skip) with control, using changes in speed and direction smoothly in game and activity settings.
    • Example: Students use quick accelerations, controlled stops, and sharp directional changes while playing tag, invasion games, or in relay events.
  • PE:S1.5b – Balance, Stability, and Coordination in Complex Tasks Maintain static and dynamic balance while performing more complex movements, such as jumping, landing, rotating, and changing levels.
    • Example: Students complete an obstacle course that includes single-leg balances, low beams, and controlled landings from jumps without losing stability.
  • PE:S4.5a – Consistent Rule-Following & Safety Leadership Consistently follow rules, class routines, and safety procedures and help others follow them without frequent reminders.
    • Example: Students use equipment correctly, respect boundaries, and remind peers to stop and listen when they hear the teacher’s whistle.
  • PE:S4.5e – Responsibility, Effort, and Self-Directed Behavior Show responsibility by arriving prepared, using time efficiently, caring for equipment, and staying engaged without constant teacher direction.
    • Example: Students rotate through stations on their own, transition quickly when signaled, and clean up equipment at the end of class.

Success Criteria — Student Language

  • I can use a scooter with control and follow all safety rules.
  • I can keep my body balanced and stable while riding, turning, or stopping.
  • I can use my core to help me stay steady and move safely.
  • I can help remind others about boundaries, safe lanes, and scooter rules.
  • I can stay focused, use equipment correctly, and move quickly into the next activity without wasting time.
