Unit Plan 20 (Grade 5 PE): Yoga, Balance & Mind-Body Connection
Grade 5 yoga and balance unit plan focused on breathing, stability, stress management, and mind-body wellness through calm movement.
Focus: Build mind-body awareness, support stress management through movement, and improve balance and stability through guided breathing, yoga flow sequences, and calm balance circuits.
Grade Level: 5
Subject Area: Physical Education (Mind-Body Fitness • Balance & Stability • Wellness & Reflection)
Total Unit Duration: 1 core session + 2 optional sessions (1–3 weeks), 50–60 minutes per session
I. Introduction
Students explore how movement can help them feel stronger, calmer, and more focused. In this unit, students learn that Physical Education is not only about fast-paced games and competition, but also about improving balance, controlling breathing, and recognizing how movement affects stress, energy, and concentration. Through guided breathing, slow walking and stretching transitions, yoga flow sequences, and balance circuits, students practice body control in a calm and supportive environment. The unit helps students connect physical movement with both physical health and mental well-being, while building confidence in poses and balance tasks that require attention, stability, and patience.
Essential Questions
- How can breathing and slow, controlled movement help the body and mind feel calmer?
- What does good balance look and feel like during yoga and stability tasks?
- How can I notice the difference between light, moderate, and calm effort during movement?
- How can yoga and mind-body movement support physical health, stress management, and overall wellness?
II. Objectives and Standards
Learning Objectives — Students will be able to:
- Maintain balance, stability, and coordination during static and dynamic yoga and balance tasks.
- Participate actively and consistently in guided yoga flow and balance work throughout class.
- Use simple tools such as effort scales, breathing awareness, or the talk test to describe activity intensity.
- Recognize and explain how yoga and controlled movement can support physical, mental, and social well-being.
- Demonstrate body control, calm transitions, and focus during breathing, stretching, and balance practice.
Standards Alignment — 5th Grade (SHAPE America-based custom)
- PE:S1.5b – Balance, Stability, and Coordination in Complex Tasks Maintain static and dynamic balance while performing more complex movements, such as jumping, landing, rotating, and changing levels.
- Example: Students complete an obstacle course that includes single-leg balances, low beams, and controlled landings from jumps without losing stability.
- PE:S3.5a – Sustained Participation in Moderate-to-Vigorous Activity Participate actively and continuously in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) for significant portions of class without frequent off-task behavior.
- Example: During fitness circuits or small-sided games, students remain engaged and moving, minimizing standing time between turns.
- PE:S3.5b – Monitoring Intensity with Simple Fitness Tools Use simple tools and methods (heart rate checks, perceived exertion scales, talk test, step counts) to monitor and adjust activity intensity.
- Example: After intervals of running, students check their pulse or use a 1–5 exertion scale to describe effort, then adjust pace to stay in a “target zone.”
- PE:S5.5b – Recognizing Physical, Mental, and Social Benefits Describe how regular physical activity positively affects physical health (fitness, strength), mental health (mood, stress), and social connections (friendships, teamwork).
- Example: Students explain that playing games helps them feel energized, reduces stress, and allows them to spend time with friends.
Success Criteria — Student Language
- I can hold and move through balance positions with more control.
- I can use breathing and slow movement to help my body feel calmer and more focused.
- I can tell whether my body is working at a calm, light, or stronger effort level.
- I can stay engaged during yoga and balance activities even though they are slower than some other PE units.
- I can explain how yoga and movement can help my body, my mood, and my overall health.
