Unit Plan 18 (Grade 6 ELA): Presenting Findings Clearly

Focus: Oral presentations with visuals; precise language; adapting speech

Grade Level: 6

Subject Area: English Language Arts (Speaking & Listening; Writing—Tech; Language)

Total Unit Duration: 5 sessions (one week), 45–60 minutes per session

I. Introduction

Great presentations make ideas understandable and memorable. This week, students transform research findings into a coherent oral presentation with purposeful visuals, precise language, and delivery choices adapted to audience and context. They’ll draft slides, rehearse with notes, revise for clarity and tone, and present with confidence—then reflect on how choices in visuals and language shape understanding.

II. Objectives and Standards

Learning Objectives — Students will be able to…

  1. Plan and deliver a well-organized presentation that highlights key findings with clear delivery (eye contact, volume, pronunciation) (SL.6.4).
  2. Integrate multimedia (images, charts, brief clips) that clarify rather than distract; cue them smoothly (SL.6.5).
  3. Adapt speech to task, purpose, and audience, using formal English when appropriate (SL.6.6).
  4. Use technology to produce slides/notes and collaborate on feedback (W.6.6).
  5. Choose precise language, vary sentence patterns, and maintain consistent tone (L.6.3).
