Unit Plan 9 (Grade 6 Orchestra): Early Performance Check

Focus: Perform a short selection emphasizing steady tempo, intonation, and unified bowings, while demonstrating appropriate rehearsal/performance etiquette.

Grade Level: 6

Subject Area: Orchestra (Ensemble PerformanceTone/IntonationRehearsal Etiquette)

Total Unit Duration: 5 sessions (one week), 50–60 minutes per session

I. Introduction

In this unit, Grade 6 orchestra students prepare for an early performance check using a short, grade-appropriate ensemble selection. The focus is on playing with steady tempo, reliable intonation, and matching bowings across sections, while also following conductor cues and demonstrating strong rehearsal etiquette. Through warm-ups, sectional work, full ensemble rehearsals, and a brief in-class performance, students experience what it means to perform as a cohesive ensemble. By the end of the week, they can identify strengths and next steps for the rest of the year.

Essential Questions

  • What does it mean to perform as a solid ensemble, not just as individual players?
  • How do steady tempo, intonation, and unified bowing affect the overall sound of our orchestra?
  • How do following conductor cues, tracking rests, and showing good rehearsal etiquette support ensemble success?
  • How can an early performance check help us set realistic goals for the rest of the year?

II. Objectives and Standards

Learning Objectives — Students will be able to:

  1. Perform a short ensemble selection with steady rhythm/tempo and mostly accurate pitch.
  2. Match bow directions and basic articulation within their section to support a unified sound.
  3. Demonstrate rehearsal and performance etiquette, including following conductor cues, tracking rests, and adjusting to match the section.
  4. Use simple rubrics/checklists to self- and peer-assess performance on tempo, intonation, and bow unity.
  5. Reflect on their performance to identify at least one strength and one area for growth for future units.

Standards Alignment — Grade 6 Orchestra (custom, NAfME-style)

  • OR:Pr6.6a — Perform orchestra music with accurate pitch, steady rhythm, characteristic tone, unified bowing, and basic expression in an ensemble setting.
    • Example: Students perform a two-part string arrangement with steady tempo and matching bow directions.
  • OR:Pr6.6b — Demonstrate appropriate rehearsal and performance etiquette, including following the conductor, tracking rests, and supporting section/ensemble success.
    • Example: Students watch for cues, count rests accurately, and adjust bowing to match the section.

Success Criteria — Student Language

  • I can keep a steady tempo with the group and not rush or drag.
  • I can play mostly in tune with clear, characteristic tone on my instrument.
  • I can match bowings and basic articulation with my section.
  • I can follow conductor cues and track rests so I enter and cut off with the ensemble.
  • I can talk about one thing we did well and one thing we need to improve after our performance.
