Unit Plan 33 (Grade 6 PE): 3v3 Tournament — Student Choice Sport
Grade 6 3v3 tournament unit builds offensive and defensive strategy, student leadership, fair self-officiating, and calm decision-making under competitive pressure.
Focus: Apply offensive and defensive strategies, manage competitive pressure, and help run a small student-led event through a 3v3 tournament.
Grade Level: 6
Subject Area: Physical Education
Total Unit Duration: 5 sessions (one week), 45–55 minutes per session
I. Introduction
In this Grade 6 Physical Education unit, students participate in a small-sided 3v3 tournament using a class-selected sport such as soccer, basketball, handball, or another teacher-approved invasion-style or court game. The unit gives students the opportunity to apply previously learned game skills in a more authentic event format while also taking on responsibilities beyond playing. Students serve as captains, scorekeepers, schedulers, and referees, helping manage game flow, track results, and support fair competition. The unit emphasizes using offensive and defensive strategies in real game situations, staying active during tournament play, responding constructively to close games or mistakes, and solving disagreements respectfully. By the end of the week, students should be able to explain how player skill, teamwork, self-control, and event organization all contribute to a successful tournament.
Essential Questions
- How can students apply offensive and defensive strategies effectively in 3v3 play?
- What helps players stay calm and make good decisions under competitive pressure?
- How do student leadership roles help a tournament run smoothly?
- What does fair self-officiating and conflict resolution look like in a small-sided event?

Standards Alignment — Grade 6 PE (SHAPE America-based custom)
- PE:S1.6f – Integrating Multiple Skills in Fluid Game Sequences Combine multiple skills—such as dribbling, passing, catching, striking, running, dodging, and shooting—smoothly and appropriately during extended game sequences.
- Example: In 3v3 play, a student passes, cuts into space, receives again, and makes a controlled scoring attempt under game pressure.
- PE:S2.6d – Offensive Strategies: Creating and Exploiting Advantages Apply offensive strategies such as creating space, using give-and-go, setting simple screens, recognizing mismatches, and choosing high-percentage plays.
- Example: Students use spacing, quick passing, and support movement to create better scoring chances in small-sided play.
- PE:S2.6e – Defensive Strategies: Marking, Containment, and Help Defense Apply defensive principles such as marking a specific player, containing penetrations, maintaining good body position, and providing help defense when teammates are beaten.
- Example: Students stay between their player and the scoring area, help on drives, and recover to cover open space during 3v3 games.
- PE:S3.6a – Regular Participation in Moderate-to-Vigorous Physical Activity Participate regularly in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) during class and demonstrate effort to remain active and engaged for most of the lesson.
- Example: During tournament rounds, warm-ups, and support roles, students stay active and engaged rather than remaining off-task or inactive.
- PE:S4.6b – Cooperation, Leadership, and Inclusive Participation Work cooperatively with diverse peers, assume and rotate leadership roles (captain, referee, coach, equipment manager), and intentionally include all group members.
- Example: Students rotate through roles such as captain, scorekeeper, and referee while ensuring teammates are included and supported.
- PE:S4.6c – Self-Control, Sportsmanship, and Emotional Regulation Demonstrate self-control, positive sportsmanship, and emotional regulation in competitive and cooperative contexts, responding to wins, losses, and mistakes constructively.
- Example: Students stay composed after a turnover, missed shot, or close loss and continue playing respectfully.
- PE:S4.6d – Constructive Conflict Resolution and Self-Officiating Use fair, agreed-upon strategies to resolve disagreements and participate appropriately in self-officiated or peer-officiated games.
- Example: When teams disagree about a call, they pause briefly, use the class method, accept the outcome, and resume play.
